ABOUT US
The Dr. Goodburn’s Foundation is a 501(c)(3), non- profit organization that supports Vieques, PR, a small island of 9,000 residents without a hospital, pharmacy or any lifesaving medical supplies or equipment available to the people. We are dedicated to providing medical supplies so that not one more child, or any life, is needlessly lost because of lack of resources.
WHAT WE DO
100% of donations will go directly towards purchasing basic supplies and lifesaving equipment for the ER. Simple supplies such as syringes, gloves, gowns, bed sheets, gauze, bandages, antibiotics, IV fluids, disinfecting supplies, basic surgical and birthing supplies – are to name a few of the essential supplies that are desperately needed.
Equipment such as an up to date Xray machine, resuscitation equipment, a dialysis machine, an ultrasound machine, and storage for medicines and blood are desperately needed. A goal that we are striving to reach is the ability to provide chemotherapy on the island as well.

STORY
HISTORY OF THE ISLAND OF VIEQUES
Vieques is an island 8 miles off the eastern coast of the main island of Puerto Rico. The small, volcanic island is 21 miles from east to west and 4.5 miles from north to south. Vieques was originally inhabited by ancient indigenous peoples, known as the Taino, dating back to 3000BC. When the Europeans landed on the main island led by Christopher Columbus, the indigenous peoples fought against the Europeans. The Spanish armies came and killed, enslaved, and imprisoned the inhabitants of Vieques. It was not until the 19th century, that the Spanish took over the island and in 1854, Vieques was annexed to Puerto Rico proper.
Around this time, many slaves were brought over from neighboring Caribbean islands to work on the sugar cane plantations which was the main support of the Vieques economy until the 1930’s. The ruins of which are still standing today.
